I am an Associate Professor at the Historiographical Institute, The University of Tokyo, working at the intersection of digital humanities and information technology. I build open-source software that helps researchers create, structure, and use cultural and historical data.
My work centers on IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework), Linked Open Data, TEI, and digital archives — connecting images, texts, and metadata so that historical materials become computable and reusable. I am especially interested in lowering the barrier between humanities researchers and the tools that make their sources discoverable.
Research focus
- IIIF & digital archives — viewers, annotation, and georeferencing tools for cultural collections
- Linked Open Data for the humanities — modeling and publishing historical knowledge
- TEI & text encoding — collaborative OCR correction and structured text for East Asian materials
- Long-term preservation — OAIS-based archival workflows (Archivematica, Omeka S)
At a glance
- 130 papers, 14 books, and 123 presentations (researchmap)
- 21 academic awards across digital archives, Linked Open Data, and information processing communities
- Program Committee Chair for JADH (Japanese Association for Digital Humanities); active in the TEI East Asian / Japanese SIG
- 388+ open-source repositories on GitHub
Selected software
Most of my tools are open source and built around IIIF and Linked Data. A few starting points:
- IIIF Discovery in Japan — finding and aggregating IIIF resources
- nuxt-mirador — integrating the Mirador 3 viewer
- IIIF Georeference viewer — maps with the IIIF Georeference Extension
